Most of what people call a gate problem is actually an access-control problem. The gate and the operator are fine; what has failed is the keypad, the intercom, the receiver, the telephone-entry unit, or a buried loop. This is its own discipline — low-voltage wiring, long cable runs, directories and access codes, and increasingly cellular units that replaced the copper phone lines these systems were designed around. It is also where the local damage shows up: buried loops sit in a driveway that shrink-swell clay pulls apart at the saw cut, a keypad and a photo-eye lens are the smallest and most exposed things hail can find, and every low-voltage run to a keypad is a surge path during storm season. We diagnose the access-control side properly rather than replacing an operator that was never the problem.
When the remote opens the gate and the keypad does not, the diagnosis is already half done: the operator, the motor and the leaf are all sound, and the fault is in the keypad or the wire running out to it. Hail makes that split obvious around here, because it takes out whatever is exposed — keypad faces, intercom buttons, photo-eye lenses — while the operator behind its housing carries on working.
A loop is wire cut into the driveway and sealed over, wired to a detector that tells the operator a vehicle is present. Blackland Prairie clay works against it directly: seasonal shrink and swell opens the saw cut and shears the wire inside. The symptom is a gate that opens normally and then refuses to close, or one that closes on a car it should have seen. It reads like an operator fault and is not one.
Telephone-entry units were designed to dial residents over analogue copper. As those lines are retired or converted, the units fail in confusing ways — calls that connect intermittently, audio in one direction only. The fix is usually a cellular module rather than a new entry system. On the community entries across Allen, Frisco and McKinney it comes bundled with directory work: adding and removing residents, and keeping vendor codes separate so they can be revoked on their own.
How long does it take? Keypad, receiver and remote work is usually 1–2 hours. Telephone-entry programming and directory work depends on how many residents are in the system. A cut or failed buried loop means saw-cutting and re-laying, which is most of a day.
