The gate operator is the motor and gearbox that actually moves your gate, and it is where most gate failures start. A slide gate operator drags a heavy leaf along a track on a chain or rack; a swing operator pushes an arm through an arc. Both take real load, both sit outdoors through 100-degree North Texas summers and hail season, and both are full of parts that wear: drive gears, chain, limit switches, capacitors, and a control board that a lightning surge or a hailstone through the enclosure lid can end in one afternoon. The useful thing to know is that a gate which hums, stalls, or runs in only one direction is almost never a dead motor — it is a component inside the operator with a name and a price. A humming operator is the most misread symptom on a gate. The hum is the motor energised and trying to turn, so the supply, the board and the windings are doing their job — what has stopped is downstream. Usually that is a sheared drive gear, a chain that has jumped its sprocket, or a start capacitor that has given up. Capacitors are the first casualty of a 100°F afternoon inside a west-facing enclosure. A genuinely dead motor is silent.
Operators sense force and stop when the load exceeds what they expect, so a gate that quits at the same point on every cycle is usually reporting a real obstruction at that point. Blackland Prairie clay is why it appears seasonally: a wet spring lifts a post or one section of a long slide track, an August drought drops it again, and the operator meets resistance that was not there in March. A gate that opens but will not close is rarely mechanical. Most operators are built to keep opening while refusing to close when a safety input reports something in the way, so the fault is usually a limit switch, a photo eye with a hail-cracked lens, or a buried loop sheared where the clay has opened its saw cut. Those are inputs, not motors, and they sit on the access-control side of the system.
How long does it take? Most operator repairs take 60–120 minutes from arrival to test cycle. Common boards, gears and capacitors ride on the truck, so it is usually a same-visit fix.
